£255 a Month With the Heating OFF: Europe’s Energy Trap

One British energy supplier has handed out more than 110,000 free electric blankets. One Reddit O.P. switched off all the heating in a one-bed flat — and the next electricity bill went up to £255. Another, in Belgium, has the thermostat at 30 degrees and is still freezing.

How did the continent that invented the modern grid end up rationing warmth? Merit-order pricing, leaky buildings, and €651 billion of emergency support later — here's the European energy crisis, Reddit edition.

In fairness

Marginal pricing rewards cheap generation and investment; the 2022 crisis was a gas supply shock after Russia's invasion; gas's price-setting role is shrinking where renewables grow (Spain); Reddit posts are anecdotes; support prevented real hardship, main flaw was poor targeting.
